 Spanish decree over the island, ended after the final Spanish Governor, Don José Maria Chacón surrendered the island to a British fleet of 18 warships under the command of Sir Ralph Abercromby on February 18, 1797.

 Chaguaramas then became a united states naval base and came into full operation in 1943. the importance of Chaguaramas to the world war II effort was even greater increased with the construction in 1966 of one of the eight Omega navigation systems in the world

 On April 22, 1960 the Governing party organized a rally. It began with speeches at Woodford Square. The choice of speakers - CLR James, Lennox Pierre, Janet Jagan, all known socialist - was a clear signal to the US.
